Recipe courtesy: Kamala (my grandma)

This is a true delicacy!! It is a traditional recipe given to me by my Kamala paati. She makes the awesome thavala adais.
Mom made these adais few days back and sent me the picture!

Ingredients:
1 cup boiled rice (puzhungal arisi)
1/4 cup toor dal
1 half of a broken fresh coconut (grate it completely)
1 tsp jeera
1 tsp peppercorns
salt to taste
hing 3 dashes
Soak boiled rice (puzhungal arisi) for 2 hours and the toor dal for 1/2 hour.
Grind separately the soaked rice to a slightly coarse paste (like idly rava consistency).
Please do not add any water. The paste must be thick.
Grind the toor dal separately to a coarse paste (1 dal should be broken into 4 parts), again without water.
Mix the two pastes together evenly. Add grated coconut, jeera, pepper, hing, salt.
Mix evenly to a dough. Take out a ball of the dough and flatten it out in the shape of urad vadas (with the hole in the centre like a donut).
Use a heavy thick broad aluminium/ indalium kadai, add lots of oil (for about 2-3 inches on the surface).
Place these flattened out adais on the sizzling oil and roast evenly on either sides till golden brown and crunchy!!!
Served with molagapodi (chutney podi) and oil and some puli molagai (molaga thokku)
Since I don't have such beautiful traditional vessels or heavy kadais here, I just use the iron dosa griddle. Ofcourse, nothing like doing it the authentic way...It makes a huge difference!!

Lovely one. This is one of my Dad's favorite dish and my Mom makes sambar or morkuzhambu as side dish. Your post is kindling fond golden memories for me. Feel like having it right away.
looks very crunchy..can we use raw rice? never tried this one.

Using plain raw could affect the texture... howevere, there is an idea... A simple method to convert raw rice into boiled rice..
Just transfer the sedired amount of raw rice(like long grain or any variety) into a pressure cooker safe vessel. Steam it for 5-7 min without adding the weight and without adding water in that vessel. Do add water at the bottom of the cooker for steaming. It will turn into par-boiled rice (puzhungal arisi)
I am yet to post this tip on the blog... this is a cool idea from my friend who does this to make her idlis with long grain rice:)
it should steam for 5 min (meaning the steam should come out for 5 min..so it might a few 2-3 min more for the cooker to heat up

Hi Preethi,This is my MIL's masterpiece. But we do not soak and grind. we grind it in a flourmill to a rava consistency and mix in boiling water slowly as of "kozhakattai" and then the same procedure.

hehe, true vrinda..thavalla (big lla) means frog in tamil too! thavala seems to be the vessel, ..guess im rite..haha, true true...we always make fun of thavala vadai and thavala adais!

Mythri, u could use idli rice instead... Also u can steam raw rice for 5 min to convert to boiled rice

Mythri, may be you should try idli rice or steamed raw rice(just steam it for 7 min in the pressure cooker without adding water or weight..)just add water at the base for steaming...
